Camera Bags – They Are Always Too Small

The title is not a complaint. It really isn’t. It’s an observation on having purchased and lived with more camera toting gear, bags, backpacks, satchels, wraps, straps, and cases than I care to remember. Every single one of them was quickly became too small. I was thinking about this today when I pulled out my Domke F-803 to grab a pamphlet that I jammed in the back pocket about a week ago. I just ordered a new F-803, this one is in the new “ruggedwear” finish. I assume it...

Leica Conundrum Or Lens Anxiety

As a lot of you probably know I do love my rangefinder cameras and thought that I would probably buy an M9 by this point. I am not at all interested in an M8. Well before I plopped down my hard earned money I decided to shoot for a while with my old film Leica’s instead – just to see if I really could justify an M9 purchase. Guess what – not only have I decided that I do not want an M9 – at least not a $10,000...

Film Cameras – The Ludicrous Fire Sales on EBay

Just for giggles I have been casually looking at random camera deals on EBay over the last couple of days. No real direction or intent, just things that struck my fancy at the time and some random searches, etc. I cannot believe what you can buy in film cameras of all shapes and sizes for next to nothing now. I need another camera like I need a hole in the head but I may not be able to pass some of this stuff up if I am on the...

Seven Year Old TMAX P3200

Well, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and shoot more film prior to taking the M9 plunge. I really haven’t shot film in the last two years since my last move. Well I did shoot some medium format but that was color and was not my M series Leica. In preparation to start shooting seriously with the M series I ordered up a fresh batch of developer and fixer from Photographers Forumulary and it arrived today. To warm up the old darkroom skills I figured...

Leica Rangefinder Work – Fantastic Example

Just ran across this fantastic example of the kind of work that Leica rangefinder cameras excel at. Not really my taste in the specific treatment of the negatives (this was done on film) but the images are great and as I said a fantastic example. If this is the kind of thing (range and proximity) of things you like to shoot. The M9 or M6 or M3 may be the camera for you. If you are too lazy to process and scan film then definitely the M9. This image...

Leica M9 – Thoughts On Lenses

Have had a lot of interest and some interesting conversations fueled by my enthusiastic post greeting the recently released Leica M9. It appears that I am not the only one interested in the new M9. That’s not surprising – what is surprising is that there seems to be way more people interested in the M9 that have never shot with a film version – like the M6, than I ever predicted. A lot of the conversations that I have had with folks that would be delving into rangefinders for...

Nikon DSLR v Leica M

Had a couple of readers write in about my last post on the Leica M9. Specifically my classification of the Leica being a “small” camera. A picture is worth a thousand words so I quickly assembled a typical Nikon DSLR kit and then the equivalent Leica M series kit to show you side by side. As you can see the Leica kit is way, way, way smaller and I will assure you the images are way, way, way better. No compromise. This is for those of you who have...

Leica Finally Does Digital Right

Remember my ill fated new camera scheme back at the beginning of the summer? If you don’t here it is in a nutshell. Sell my relatively new stuff while the resale value is still high and buy a D700 and a D3x. Well I sold my stuff and in the short time that I was without it I realized my old stuff, my really old stuff like my D2 series stuff was just fine. There was no way I was now going to drop $10,000, even if most of...

Do “Real” Photographers Still Shoot Film?

Not many – but this one does – or did for an amazing documentary piece on MediaStorm. I have sung the praises of MediaStorm.org in at least one post regarding presentation of your images. I have always been a big fan of fantastic journalism, a fast disappearing art. If you have not checked out MediaStorm yet you really should. The stories are not only compelling but so are the images and presentation. I believe this is the real future of journalism, amazing stuff. Heck I even taught myself Final Cut...

Shooting Film – Ilford Delta100 In PMK Pyro

I spent about a week calibrating Ilford Delta100 in a couple different developers. I have only ever shot it on 35mm on a few rare occasions. I ultimately decided to stay with Kodak TMAX 100 for both 35mm as well as medium format applications. The Delta 100 was a fantastic film and a worthy competitor to TMAX 100. My decision to stay with TMAX 100 over the Ilford film was purely subjective, I had no technical issues with TMAX 100 as so many others do and I happened to...
