Shooting Film Follies – 2010 Edition

I know – too much about film. Don’t worry the only reason is I have had Aperture 3 on the brain for way way too long over the last few days going through the latest soon to be released (this week I promise) Organization eBook. So now that I took a break from that today I wanted to wrap up the ongoing mini-posts I have been doing on Delta 100. So far we have seen a bit of the image I wanted to talk about rear it’s ugly head...

Strange Things Photographers Do

Except for the occasional emotional outburst and associated ranting I do here you probably thing I am a fairly rational photographer. No voodoo or chicken bone waving kind of stuff – I like to know how things work including the materials and devices I use to make images with. Of course I am not all logic and ration, heck I use Leicas and some lenses that are not considered “the best” and film because I like the way it looks, and in some cases feels. I am sure that...

I Have To Go To Japan

I just love some of these Japanese photographers. They produce some of the coolest images with the most meager of gear. Should I learn the language first? I am actually serious about the Japan visit – even if just for a vacation and to see some of what I understand are a ton of photography exhibitions that are all over the place. Anyway, remember this site I linked to a while ago that displays images of the cameras people carry around Tokyo? Well his latest post was about Michio...

Kodak TXP RIP

I know it has been a while since kodak decided to stop making TRI-X Pro 320 in medium format. I think I am one of the only people on the planet that actually still shot the stuff, most folks think of TX or TRI-X 400 when they think of TRI-X at all, well at least the stuff that comes in rolls. I think they still make the TXP in sheet film but it is soooo expensive it’s not funny and I tend to shoot subjects on sheet film that...

Film – I Am NOT The Only One

Yea – you all know I still love film and am thinking of making it my primary medium for some up coming “real” work that I am planning on that is a little further from my front door. You also know that I highlight some other “crazy fools” that still shoot the stuff. The thing that surprised me is how many people still shoot film and love using their film gear in the land spews digital photo products 24×7. You have to check out a couple pages of this...

Leica M – Film – Micro 4/3

Some clarifications from my last post regarding my choices, why they are right for me, and my subject matter. 80% of my pictures are rendered as 8×10 or smaller usually in books of some sort either digital or books I make from prints that I do myself. The other 19% are in prints that are approximately 11×14 in size maybe longer if I do full frame and the last 1% are bigger than that – usually for temporary exhibition purposes where people are not right on top of them....

Out of the Funk – Shooting For Real – Again

So, long time readers might remember that I really haven’t shot seriously in about 2 years or so. I really needed to take a long break. I had over done my chosen subject and vocation. So much so that I really didn’t even feel like picking up a camera again. Not a good place to be given I love photography. That was a stupid thing to do – not shooting for a couple of years. I can say that now because having spent time away from the camera in...

Photographic Biases – Cleared Up

I had an interesting conversation with a reader of this site that wanted to know about some of my photographic biases. Her words – not mine, note that she has never commented on any of the posts in question that display those biases and I doubt she will comment on this one so I hope I represent things fairly and accurately. My intent is to clarify some undertones that have obviously crept in over the years. The main points of her inquiries can be summarized as follows: Why do...

Some New Sample Papers Available

You probably know this but in case you didn’t I used to love some of the old Agfa black and white papers. Really love them. They were unique and some images just lent themselves to these unique papers. I recently tried the new Adox MCC and it is dead on Agfa MCC with one exception – the base is bayarta – bright white vs natural. The emulsion color seems identical so does the surface of the glossy. I even like it better for some prints. That is why I...

Check This Nikon Out – Seventy Bucks

This has to be the best condition, least used, camera I have ever seen that was not bought and hoarded by a “collector”.  This is a Nikon FM, not an FM2 which means that it was made between 1977 and 1982. That is really old and this is a black paint version – yep that is black paint over brass – not plastic and not anodized. Typically cameras that have had more than a couple rolls of film through them and actually shot have “brassing” this one has NONE....
