Beater Camera Follow Up – Nikon D2H – The Beast

I have had a number of interesting email conversations with some fellow Nikon shooters. Some who use Aperture and some who Don’t. A lot of people that I have had conversations with are sending me NEF files so that I can develop some presets for cameras that I do not own. I thank you and promise to get to it very very soon. I am working on a bunch of cameras right now. One of the side conversations that I had surrounded Nikon color, the “beater camera” post that...

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Hey I know this guy is super duper popular for his introducing the everyman out there to using flash (even though he talks cheap and actually uses expensive things and big lights now or like 12 SB900′s). I have to admit he has done some cool stuff way back but I just have to ask WTF lately? I am a little picky – I admit it. I think 99% of commercial images published today are at best mediocre – formulaic – flat – juiced up in PS. I blame...

Aperture Adjustment Controls – Beyond The Sliders

One of the things that I have always liked about Aperture adjustments is how useful the normal range of the sliders are. The entire range is very finely tuned and quite useful. It reminds me a whole lot of the BMW’s that I have owned. The steering, accelerator, and brakes have a finely tuned range. You want subtle? You Got it. More Power – more gas. Unlike some other cars I have driven where the useful range is the first 2mm of travel, or so it feels. Sort of...

Aperture RAW Processing – The Not So Ugly Truth

I just went through an exercise with a reader that was doing all his RAW NEF conversions in Capture One Pro prior to importing into Aperture because the RAW conversion was so much “better”. The reality is that Aperture RAW processing is really really good. It just is neutral/flat out of the camera and juiced way way up by default without doing anything “out of the box” with Capture One Pro. Really. Personally I think the default Capture One Pro settings for “film curve” and the default sharpening and...

Nikon – Aperture and War Against Bit-twiddling

Just a quick follow-up post regarding a bunch of email conversations I have had regarding my last post about what me, me, me wants in the next version of Aperture. I have engaged in a number of interesting and not so interesting conversations regarding that post. I cannot begin to cover all of them at the moment but I had so many regarding my number one issue, NEF RAW processing, that I thought I would share a couple thoughts. First I had about the same number of emails that...

The Next Aperture?

I have resisted writing a post like this for quite a while. Mostly due to the fact that there are plenty of sources of complaints, wishlists, and prognostications about Aperture’s features, what it needs, and how it should or shouldn’t work. Somehow I feel like the sole Aperture cheerleader out there and am feeling a little lonely. Today I am going to vent a bit about what I feel Aperture needs. I am not going to do this from a how can we sell more copies perspective or repeat...

Aperture Matching Exercise.

Just a real quick question for all of the loyal readers or not so loyal, whatever the case may be. At the end of a long day I checked the download stats on the site and noticed an amazing number of people downloaded the NEF files from the last post. Did anyone try to match the NX2 or NX color renditions (flat color settings or portrait)? I personally would love to know two things from you and I am sure that the others that downloaded the files would also...
