Jeanloup Sieff – Follow-up #2

Yes I am obsessing on Sieff – got a couple of more emails either thanking me for turning people onto him that have never seen his work or thanking me for reminding them of this fantastic photographer. I also got a couple requests to recommend the “best” book of Sieff’s work. Well I have a few and have no idea if there are newer better books than my favorite. My favorite book that I happen to own on Sieff is titled “Jeanloup Sieff 40 Years of Photography”. This book...

Stupid Product Idea #17 – Now For Sale (Maybe)

I have had about 700 people email me questions about various films/developers/papers/lenses and equipment that I happen to comment on here at the old random photography blog that is sometimes chockfull of Aperture goodness. A heck of a lot of those questions are about film, paper, prints, and developer materials for film photography. Hey I may be one of the few that love the stuff but I have become acutely aware that there are many more photographers and even consumers of photography that are also interested in film and...

Sieff – A Follow-Up

Funny thing – I have had a ton of people come up and thank me for posting the little blurb regarding Jeanloup Sieff. Well not really “come up” but email me, message me, and even mention it in another forum. Seems that a lot of people really like his work, did find it inspirational, and here is the surprise – NEVER HEARD OF HIM BEFORE. Well – here is a couple of little tidbits that I thought might also be interesting to you. First off he is not a...

Photographic Inspiration – Jeanloup Sieff

This guy has been one of my photographic heros since I was a kid. I sought him out after trying to figure out who the heck shot some of the fashion advertising images in magazines that I was blown away with. When I was a late teenager or in my early twenties I read a biography that was available and instantly knew that I identified with his aesthetic and more than that totally got where he was coming from. He remains on my top list even now through a...

New Series – Photographers For Inspiration

Before going off to do the Christmas thing I wanted to put a post out there that is sort of a “note to self” and an introduction to a series of posts that I will be putting up in the coming year. I have had countless conversations with readers on just about all things photographic. A lot of Apple Aperture stuff, Some Abobe LightRoom things, a PS question or two, cameras, film, lighting, you name it. The thing that struck me today is that during those conversations we almost...

New Lens – New Project Part II

Been playing with that new (antique) lens doing a lot of test shots of stupid crap in preparation for my brand spanking new epic portrait project. I do a lot of testing and preparation work – also known as a way to rationalize procrastination and feel “busy” and “productive”. At the end of the day I would be just as busy and way more productive if I did my crappy test shots of the subject of my actual project. Maybe I will try that someday. Is there really a...

Kodak – Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

I posted a brief note on my follies searching for an 8×10 sheet film that was “cheaper” than my favorites from Kodak. I was testing Efke R100/PL100 due to the fact that I can get it for about half what I pay for Kodak. I started with the 120 R100 and also have a small box of 50 sheets of 4×5 PL100. I was not going to shell out $100 just to test. So here is what I have found. The Efke 100 is workable but I am not going...

Massive Film Development Chart – The Most Useless Thing On The Web

I had a reader ask me a question about film development. Specifically what my development times were for a particular film/developer combination. The reason he asked was he “liked” the way one of my images looked but he had issues with a development time/temp he got from “The Massive Development Chart”. Hmmmm…. well that depends on a lot of things. The most gigantic thing is YOU and YOUR process and how tight YOUR controls are and… To a much much lesser extent it has to do with water quality....

What Do You Think of My New Lens?

Yea, I know that my test shots are boring and stupid but look beyond that for a second. I got this thing today and could not wait to see what it looked like on film. My new lens is a 13 inch triple convertible Wollensak Velostigmat with a Compur shutter from the 1930′s. Actually it is 3 lenses a 20 inch, a 13 inch, and a 25 inch depending on how you screw it together. It’s uncoated and just what I wanted. Nobody was around and I didn’t want...

Shooting Film – Kodak Plus-X and Reader Curiosity

Way way way back I wrote a blurb that had a digital photograph of a medium format negative on a light table. You may remember it, I think it was called Photographers and Their tools or something like that. Anyway, after posting that I decided to ask a question over at APUG.com about not that specific negative but why Kodak Plus-X pan had a blue base. I still do not have an answer to that question but I did get some interesting info – depending on your process the...
