Window Light – Six Tips

You can’t tell from the comments but the most popular post last week by far was the tiny little post on window light that I put up on the site. This is all stuff that “we” already know but tend to forget about and don’t practice it as time goes by and little TTL flashes creep into the mix and experiments with HDR cram our brains, and, and. I thought it would be useful to every once in a while call a time out for all that and get...

Shooting Film Follies – 2010 Edition

I know – too much about film. Don’t worry the only reason is I have had Aperture 3 on the brain for way way too long over the last few days going through the latest soon to be released (this week I promise) Organization eBook. So now that I took a break from that today I wanted to wrap up the ongoing mini-posts I have been doing on Delta 100. So far we have seen a bit of the image I wanted to talk about rear it’s ugly head...

Jeanloup Sieff Book – Get ‘um While They Last

Some of you probably know that Jeanloup Sieff is one of my inspirations and has been since I was a young photographer in the 80′s. His work spans decades and transcends his label as a “fashion photographer”. Except for some of the well know iconic people that are in his images that for ever set a time – I feel that his work is as fresh and relevant as it was when it was first made. I have written quite a bit about him and suggested a book titled...

Strange Things Photographers Do

Except for the occasional emotional outburst and associated ranting I do here you probably thing I am a fairly rational photographer. No voodoo or chicken bone waving kind of stuff – I like to know how things work including the materials and devices I use to make images with. Of course I am not all logic and ration, heck I use Leicas and some lenses that are not considered “the best” and film because I like the way it looks, and in some cases feels. I am sure that...

I Have To Go To Japan

I just love some of these Japanese photographers. They produce some of the coolest images with the most meager of gear. Should I learn the language first? I am actually serious about the Japan visit – even if just for a vacation and to see some of what I understand are a ton of photography exhibitions that are all over the place. Anyway, remember this site I linked to a while ago that displays images of the cameras people carry around Tokyo? Well his latest post was about Michio...

Nik Silver EFX Pro Revisited Again

I have written about Nik’s wonderful Silver EFX Pro on numerous occasions, including one of my very rare non-review reviews. In a word it is the only black and white simulation software I would bother with. It is really really good in a lot of ways. In my review I did complain about the film simulations not being quite right – sort of like over the top cartoon versions of the represented films – of course you can fine tune them to your liking. My main point was that...

Some New Sample Papers Available

You probably know this but in case you didn’t I used to love some of the old Agfa black and white papers. Really love them. They were unique and some images just lent themselves to these unique papers. I recently tried the new Adox MCC and it is dead on Agfa MCC with one exception – the base is bayarta – bright white vs natural. The emulsion color seems identical so does the surface of the glossy. I even like it better for some prints. That is why I...

Misadventures In Photography

Here is what happens when I get frustrated in the dark – those marks on the top of the frame are fingernail marks from me saying “F THIS”  after 10 minutes of screwing around with a 4×5 film holder that I thought I had “fixed” a year ago. No big deal it was just me screwing around with negatives for a new print process I am experimenting with. Since I had five other negatives I was developing at the same time I just chucked it in with the rest....

Shooting Film – Email Questions and Other Crap

My crazy little experiment in providing samples of Adox MCC 110 has been successful. We’ll it has been successful for my definition of accomplishing what I wanted to do – give people the opportunity to see real black and white paper in their own hands for cheap. My other definition of successful was that I could actually handle fulfilling the orders in the context of my own printing sessions. So far so good but I have been getting some questions about the sample prints – one of which I...

New Acquisition – Black And White And Other Thoughts

Well that Nikon FM2 that came the other day works great. The meter agrees 100% with my D3 center-weighted meter at the same ISO. I also shot it against a known good quantity (my electronically controlled Nikon F100) with the same film and same development and guess what – the rolls are identical from an exposure stand point. It is a keeper. A couple of people sent me emails and asked if I was serious about shooting 35mm film – they sort of get the 120 and sheet film...
