Aperture And Nikon NEF

I know I drone on and on about this but I thought a few of you Aperture/Nikon shooters out there and maybe even some Leica M9 shooters may find it interesting there seems to be a strange connection in the way that Aperture renders NEF color and the way the Leica M9 renders color in it’s JPG’s. Well not really a connection but an interesting similarity of “issues”. This is going to take some leaps of faith on your part to follow along. This is a code word for...

Aperture Presets

Or any other “presets” for that matter are not evil. I feel compelled to say that and get my official position out there after some mis-understandings of prior posts and a few emails regarding the subject after my “HDR preset” post went viral. First off, I do use presets, my own, not presets I buy. I however am not a fan of for sale presets. I will re-explain why in a second without the subtle sarcasm so I am clear along with some advice in setting up your own...

Aperture 3 Free HDR Preset

I thought I would follow up the Nik HDR Efex Pro announcement with a free preset for all of you Aperture 3 people. If you haven’t been reading for a while you probably don’t know that I am not a big fan of HDR but I thought that this preset might be a fun way to introduce you to the power and the glory of Aperture’s Highlights and Shadows adjustment. Here is an old tutorial on Highlights and Shadows. Let’s not get into the “bad HDR” vs “good HDR”...

Aperture 3 – Flags and Labels

One of the features introduced with Aperture 3 that I pretty much ignored was flags and labels. I ignored them because I’ve been there and done that with a pile of other software since the beginning of time. Not that there is anything inherently bad or wrong with these two devices, it’s just that I developed better ways of doing things since I started using Aperture – way way back in ancient times. By and large I “flag” and “label” things in my work-flow by grouping them together in...

Long Time No See…

I have been quiet lately. Mostly because I have been idiotically busy with some other endeavors some of which are a wee bit more profitable than this web site. Not only that but I have also been playing my guitar (badly) since I started airing out my amps a week or so ago. Like usual I just about have my calluses back – almost. Now is about the time that I will get busy and distracted and all the crap will go back into storage for another year. Enough...

Aperture 3 – File Management Warning

If you use referenced masters in Aperture 3 you are probably going to want to know about this. Especially if you use them on multiple volumes. Somewhere along the way, maybe with the initial release of Aperture 3, maybe later, I cannot be sure. Aperture stopped working the way it used to in Aperture 2 with respect to changing out a volume of referenced masters with a backup volume. Say you have your Aperture library on volume “V1″ and a second drive with all your masters called “V2″. You...

The Archetype of My Last Post – Aperture-holes

Remember the post I put up the other day – you know me whining about the chaotic state of affairs over on that web site. I just had to post a link to this one. Typically this would get my sarcastic snarky treatment but it’s Monday and I want to start the week off on the right foot. This is a perfect example of how NOT to ask a question or ask for assistance – especially on a topic that is probably obvious to anyone that has fired up...

Aperture 3 – The Blind Leading The Blind

A little humor for today so please take this as it is intended – a light hearted comment on human nature, mine include. So… as many of you know I try to participate on the Apple Support Forum for Aperture. I am not one of those people that signed up there the very first day I started using Apple products. I signed up specifically to ask a question to other users since my pro-care support contact (the old really good pro-care – not the new one that is worthless)...

Aperture 3 – Endless “Processing” Observations

Most of you may be through the Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 conversion but for anybody still waiting or still facing difficulties here are a couple observations and some hypothesis regarding one of the big bugaboos – Endless Processing after conversion that hangs up other things you want to do behind it. I was participating in a conversation over on the Apple support forums regarding something completely different and based on input from a few different folks ONE of the things that seems is the likely culprit at the...

Aperture 3 – New Screencast – Faces

Okay – so here is something that might surprise you. I am actually using Faces – not to the extent that Matthew Bergsma is – check him out but I am using it none the less. I still thing Apple has a lot of work to do with the UI but here are my suggestions on some of the ways to use Faces most effectively. I did this screencast the same day that I did stacks and albums – I decided to release it a little later because I...
