Jacque,

Very odd - try exporting to a local disk first to see if that helps and then switch to the new library via the file menu to make sure it works. If it does copy to your laptop and try it there. Maybe it is having difficulty with your network connection or something.

I am trying to export one album on my desktop aperture library to my laptop and have not had success yet. I am following the workflow of exporting album as new library onto my laptop's desktop and has been churning for over 40 minutes (for 70 photos). I attempted yesterday with my files as referenced files and was unsuccessful. the new library appeared but would not open in aperture on the laptop. I have changed my files to being managed and it is so slow! I feel like I am missing something because it appears like it should work seamlessly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is actually an unrelated question, but I noticed that you've got a project and an album open simultaneously, in tabs. How do I do this?

I have a Pro Mac desktop and a MacBook Pro laptop. If I have A3 installed on both machines can I just simply share one library on one hard drive? I wouldn't be a big deal to keep it on one external hard drive and manually move it between computers, although putting it on a network might be nice if possible and not too slow. I just want to be able to make edits, create albums upload new pictures into new projects from either computer and not have to sync, or do import/export's. I would appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Mr. Boyer,

I just want to thank you for taking the time to express your opinions and disseminate your expertise on Aperture and photography in general.

I'm a complete newbie with a camera but am discovering its use as a fantastic artform. I'm currently learning aperture and photography together - wow, how ignorant I am. Thank you for taking the time to explain things, and thank you for holding your work as sacrosanct and not yielding to the "dumb masses" like me. Holding yourself to a level of excellence forces me to learn faster & deeper.

Thanks - I'll keep following your posts.

In the import window under the Aperture library section you should have choices of "in current location', as well as anywhere else in any folder or creating a new folder - these will reference them from those locations - only the choice "in the ... Library" will make them managed.

No, I am sorry, but what I am trying to as is say I have a group of images on a card an want to import them into Aperture. When imported I want to use them as Referenced images. I see no way to do that other than (1) import the images and select "Store in files in Aperture Library" and (2) once imported select all the images just imported and select "Relocate Masters". This is a two step process and I thought that one should be able to accomplish this during import. But I must be missing something obvious.

Very good information. From playing with it for a day now, the libraries have stood out as something I'm impressed with so far.

Eugene -

I am not sure I understand your question but I will take a guess - you can only control file location within a library using relocate/consolidate (or at import of individual images) but...

If you consolidate masters in the export library/project that is being exported they will be consolidated within that export - you then can import them to another library and they will be consolidated in that library if they do not exist - if they do exist nothing will change - referenced or consolidated. you can also relocate them in the second library to an entirely different place and when you ship them back to the original you do not need to include the masters in the export.

Maybe I will do a video - it is a lot to get in a short amount of words.

Good information, but I am confused about a simple import function. That is how does one import files, not projects, and select these files to be treated as referenced by Aperture. I cannot find a way to do this other than import and then Relocate Masters. Surely I am missing something. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
