Shooting Film ?

I have had some interesting conversations generated by a post with some ramblings about camera noise, film, and TMAX 3200P. Just for fun I thought I would post a scan and some comments regarding real honest to goodness film along with some short thoughts on it’s characteristics and how I use or have used it in the past. Just for fun, nostalgia for some, and curiosity for others. Personally I shoot 90% digital and 10% film. I am glad that I had the opportunity to shoot, process, and print...

Aperture 2 Cropping Images

I have explained this technique to speed up your work-flow about a million times over on the Aperture support forums as well as via email. I thought I would post it here hoping it may be helpful to a few readers as well as saving my time from having to re-re-re-rewrite it over and over again. Let’s say you have a project with a bunch of images that you need to crop to a specific aspect ratio. There is a really fast and easy way to do this without...

Candid Frame Plug

As I have mentioned before I am a podcast-a-holic, most of the once I listen to have nothing to do with photography. I was catching up on my podcasts the other day and one of my favoites asked to do him a favor by trying to spread the word about his little corner of the podcast world. Now that was like three episodes ago but hey better late than never. Out of all the ridiculous repetitive info-mercial crap out there one of the shining beacons of hope is The...

New Cameras, Image Noise, and Film

Had a couple of interesting email conversations about my current existensial/camera acquisition crisis that meandered into a discussion regarding image noise and some comments I made a few posts ago on why image noise is not a huge priority for me. I have never owned a specialized noise reduction tool and to be blunt I can probably count the number of times that I have used noise reduction on an image. I am not at all disparaging those that use or depend on it. I just haven’t experienced making...

Small Strobes – The Ups and Downs

I occasionally do workshops, some of them on lighting. All of the rage these days are workshops, websites, and photographers extolling the virtues and showing people what you can do with small strobes. In otherwords “hot shoe” strobes. I thought that I would share a couple of thoughts on the subject of small strobes. A couple of disclaimers first. Yes I use small strobes on occasion, I always have. I happen to use Nikon SB800′s and SB900′s (two each) and I think that the Nikon CLS is superior to...

Nikon – Aperture and War Against Bit-twiddling

Just a quick follow-up post regarding a bunch of email conversations I have had regarding my last post about what me, me, me wants in the next version of Aperture. I have engaged in a number of interesting and not so interesting conversations regarding that post. I cannot begin to cover all of them at the moment but I had so many regarding my number one issue, NEF RAW processing, that I thought I would share a couple thoughts. First I had about the same number of emails that...

The Next Aperture?

I have resisted writing a post like this for quite a while. Mostly due to the fact that there are plenty of sources of complaints, wishlists, and prognostications about Aperture’s features, what it needs, and how it should or shouldn’t work. Somehow I feel like the sole Aperture cheerleader out there and am feeling a little lonely. Today I am going to vent a bit about what I feel Aperture needs. I am not going to do this from a how can we sell more copies perspective or repeat...

Aperture, Simple or Complex

I thought the last post would help with the emails but no…. One question really stood out though. “Why are you an Aperture guy?” Hmmm…. What comes to mind is that I understand complexity but love simplicity and I Aperture seems to be an expression of that in the way that my brain works. I would guess that it is the best expression of that that I happen to have seen when it comes to image processing software. Hell, I understand exactly how it works, and how it expresses...

RAW and Aperture – Anyone Care To Help Me Out Here?

Hey people, This is why I could never be a teacher. My head would explode. Maybe I need a cooling rod like the Scorpious guy on Farscape from a few years back, for those of you who are not familiar with the series, Scorpious is a bad guy that has a chamber that unscrews from the side of his head so that he can service rods that cool his brain and stop him from going completely insane. I feel the need for one now. As I have mentioned, I...

Not So New News – OS 10.5.7

Okay, so I am not the fastest news source on the block. Here it is anyway. OS 10.5.7 is out as you probably know from every other Apple news source including your upgrade icon bouncing around in the dock. What you may not have heard is there are reports coming in from all over the place on the effects of upgrading. Of course the reports of “hey I upgraded and everything broke” are out there as usual. That is not what is interesting. What is interesting is that numerous...
