Went out and BOUGHT the latest issue and saw the pics that you were talking about. They did have a different look than what I'm used to seeing in NG as well. I'll call it "retro" as well for lack of a better term. It also seemed that the colors were exaggerated or over saturated to a slight extent, but that has tended to be the case with most anything in NG. I don't know enough about film to say that it was "film-like" but something definitely different with that series of images. Certainly not main-stream.

On a positive note, if "old" digital becomes vogue, you'll look like a creative genius shooting your older cameras and enjoy smaller file sizes as well.

Such is art.

Jason,

Wow that is late - when I wrote the post that issue was laying around the house for a couple of weeks. I think it was the May 2009 issue.

Have not received the new Nat Geo. I do have a subscription, but they have been terribly slow in getting issues to me. I'll be sure to check it out and leave a comment.

Jason and Rob,

Just curious, have either of you seen the NG article that I was referring to? Honestly shocked me, would love to hear your thoughts if you have seen it.

Maybe I'll post a couple of images shot with a D2Hs at 1600 just for grins of what things looked like in the ancient times of 5 years ago. Still love that camera - exactly the D3 in terms of handling speed, responsiveness. Slightly smaller viewfinder but my oh my can my modern computing devices fly through those RAW files with speed and grace.

I'll say this much- there used to be a place for detail and a place for grainy, blurry, blown out garbage with great content. Not so much anymore. Well, it depends where you look. Maybe now the latter is just "art", and the rest is some mixture of documentary journalism or regurgitated portraiture, and it has to be sharp, to hell with content. It's a craze, a fad, and they (we) do it because we can. And it will pass, leaving more space for the "art" to stand out.

I myself do both. I love both the super sharp detail and the grainy mess. That's life, but I'm old school, and I want my MTV.

Ran across your site looking for information about Aperture 2. I have thoroughly enjoyed your articles and commentary especially this one.

I agree wholeheartedly that pursuit of the "perfect image" in digital has eliminated some of the magic that is a photograph. So much time and money is spent on the development of these cameras to make them "perfect" that we now use software to simulate film grain and selective sharpening to make a "photographic" image.

I canceled my subscription to Pop Photo magazine because every article assumed that some type of adjustment must be made in Photoshop before the image was usable. I have seen very few articles on composition or technique, but plenty on how to "fix" things in PS.

I feel that the line gets crossed too many times between digital photography and graphic arts. There are some cool things that can be done in PS, but is it photography?
