thanks for the info all very useful.
The only time i find aperture slow on my 08 MBP is with lots of the above adjustments applied and then on the zoom using the retouch tool.
I will experiment with turning off all the adjustments, or doing this bit first.

Though having said that my pics and workflows are probably pretty basic compared to what most do.

Cheers

I imported in a large amount of RAW images and it seemed to have cratered out Aperture. It opens but the pinwheel just spins. Do you know if this is something that will affect the computer? Is there a limitation on images. I still have over 250G of space on my harddrive. I would appreciate any help.
Thank you!

Richard,

My findings are that I am faster overall in Aperture vs. Lightroom for all of the photo related tasks that I do. There are a couple of adjustment blocks that make you scratch your head and wonder why they are such a performance burden. Namely straiten and sharpen - these two are unarguably much "slower" than the counterparts in LR otherwise I have only seen issues when Aperture is used on a system with really crappy graphics/no vram. Graphics subsystem does not seem to have a big effect on LR one way or the other.
As both of us have discussed before it would be awesome if Apple allowed for a RAW processing plugin type architecture as well as a non-destructive plug-in API sort of like Nik viveza works with NX2 (built in but still). We can keep wishing.

I don't know man. I guess apple gets geek points for using core image for aperture but when using lightroom for the same adjustments ( and feeling the speed of a computer that cost about 3k more then what I paid for mine ) I have to wonder if they made a mistake.

RB
This type of fundamental treatment of Aperture's main "stressors" is really helpful, and makes using the program much more satisfying and productive. Many users have commented on frustration with slowness on various machines, or the "jerky loupe" or "beachballs".
You are to my knowledge the only one who has offered both an explanation of the cause, and a workflow based solution to mitigate the problem.
Apple obviously knows there is an issue, as all their new computers are equipped with much more powerful graphics cards (two in the new MacBook Pros) and more standard ram. The truth is that there is no hardware that software can't bring to it's knees, and we should be thrilled with capabilities that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. But once we've seen those capabilities, it's hard not to want them all,....instantly.
In the meantime thanks for offering a practical way to be more productive, and less frustrated while using a really wonderful tool.
